Big Tunas Are Here 2/12-2/20 report

Saturday, February 12th marked our charter since the oil spill. Excitement and anticipation of big tuna filled the air as our customers boarded the boat at Venice Marina that day. The weather was extremely good to us this past week, with most days seeing seas less than 2 feet. We had mixed groups in from Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, and Mississippi all week long. Some first time customers, as well as some repeat. Both Capt. Scott and Capt. Hunter steadily chipped away at the wahoo and the big yellowfin all week long with tuna between 115 and 165 pounds hitting the deck of the TailWhipped and Sea Legs. The bite came at all hours this past week, with the majority of the fish hitting in the afternoon, which frees up our mornings to hunt down the big wahoo which have been around. On Tuesday, Leger’s group hooked up to a real bruiser which pulled the 31 Albemarle three miles from the point of original hookup. The guys tag-teamed this fish for over two and a half hoursNot every story has a happy ending though, as the hooks pulled on this tuna very likely to best 200 pounds.
The big tuna are definitely here and we saw wahoo this week up to 80 pounds. Keep in mind these fish are in close right now, which means just a short ride from the marina before we are fishing. We still have some days open in March and the big fish should still be in close through April. Give us a call at 504-610-1686 to get your shot at a 200 pound yellowfin.
