Annual Island Bust/Blast
Last week marked the in between Jazz Fest week and the Annual Breton Island scout trip with old wade fishing pals plus some new additons. We arrived at the Paradise Lodge for Sunday afternoon crawfish harvest at 4pm..By 8pm we had about 30 pounds for 6 guys..Next morning the winds were a howly 25 knots so Breton Island was out..managed to hit the some protected shorelines and waylay the redfish and flounder..always wanted to fish some of these places but never made the time during peak trout hours..I threw the topwater the whole time laughing at the reds who couldnt get out of the water or turn thier mouths up to get the hooks..there was a cloud of minnows along the shoreline to which the boys picked away at the flounder and reds gorging themselves on them..headed home late to prime rib roast and late night holdum tournament.
Day 1 – SW winds 20-25knots – near mouth of Jospeph Bayou

Slept in day 2 while 1/3 the boys focused on crawfish; 1/3 worked bacon wrapped filet and crawfish bisque lunch detail and the remaining unlucky 1/3 with redfish and flounder detail..
I always laugh when guys get to the end of the redfish and someone lays 3 more on the table..needless to say our second day’s redfish” keep” would drop significantly..we arrived at the same spot for the afternoon to find the same conditions..little less wind and minnows turning the shoreline black from the contrasting brown green water..and like the day before we could see tailing fish gorging themselves on them..I think we were just short of the flounder limit for day 2.
Day 2 lineup – 10-15 knots NW water better shoreline near Joseph Bayou.

Total take for the two days was likely 120 flounder..55 reds and many releases..made another pot of bisque and flounder acadiana for dinner..no late night card game..lots of hanging out and laughs..David Montz and I joined Hunter for a late night swordtrip that yileded nothing after all but 4 left for work and the grind..we didnt see any oil though we were 20 miles south of the river..the mass hysteria hit the next morning with the arrival a TV trucks and cleanup crews..Breton was a bust due to weather and closure but we made up for it..trout are late arriving anyway..maybe next month…we had a final crawrfish boil on thursday..filled two 128 qt chests with crawfish in 4 days released one snake.
.
Hunter had Eddy Claycombe from Dallas Wednesday and they had 7 yellowfins while we were sleeping in and doing the big clean….
