9 more yellows / 50 YF tuna in 5 trips

Hunter had Daniel and crew back in from New Orleans on Monday. These guys were scheduled to fish with us back during the “big fish” season a couple months ago, but inclement weather forced them to reschedule. The last time they were down here produced a trip for the record books, with a memorable quad hookup on yellows going a hundred to 120 pounds, so we had some big shoes to fill that day. Hunter didn’t disappoint though, as we slowly chipped away at the tunas. The bite wasn’t quite on fire, but it was steady, and shortly after lunchtime we had eight tunas in the box with the ninth on the line. Another captain radioed over to ask us if we wanted a shot at the blue marlin busting baits off of his bow, and with the box looking pretty good on red meat, Hunter and Woody quickly jumped on the opportunity to score another early season bill. After carefully boating that ninth tuna, Woody and Hunter went to work bridling the 35 pound yellow. Unfortunately, this tuna was a bit large for the bill’s mouth, and so he escaped unscathed. We ended the day with 9 yellows, and on the way home encountered a sperm whale and a large manta ray. Blue blue water was in close, and we didn’t see the first drop of oil. Great day on the water.
