The Lump is back!
We were able to fish on thursday and friday of last week. On thursday we had Mitch lowery and group down from n mississippi. The seas were pretty choppy in the mourning coming out of the east so I decide to run s pass and work my way west running with the sea. Fished a few rigs with only two blackfin and two ajs to show for it I decides to try the Lump. We drifted across the lump without getting a bite. Made a quick move to the other side of the lump and was marking a pile of fish. On our second drift we hooked up on a good fish. He ran about two hundred yards on his first run. I said to myself this has to be a tuna. After a 45 min fight we got my second biggest tuna in the boat. Tried one more drift with nothing to show so we headed back in. This tuna weighed 207lbs. That made two tunas over 200 lbs in two weeks.
On Friday both Scott Leger and myself headed out. Got to the lump and dropped anchor this time. After 20 mins we had bonitos all in the slick. Soon after Steve Kapp hooked up on a nice fish. His fish ran about 400 yards on its first run. We knew it was a tuna with long 100yd runs every few mins. After about 50 mins Steve got his fish boat side and we sunk the gaffs into a fat 150 class lump tuna. Fishing kind of slowed down so we moved to the other side the lump. After 30 mins of chumming we had sharks and bonitos allover the boat. Steve made quick work on a 50lb tuna. After getting that fish inn the boat we than doubled up on two good fish. Both Rod and Steve got strapped in for a long fight. 45 mins later Steve puts his second 150lb tuna in the boat. Rod was fighting his fish like a champ. This fish tried every trick in the book to get away but this was not his day. After an hour and thirty min fight Rod put the third 200 lb tuna in 15 days in the boat. His fish weighed in at 201 lbs.
Scott had Sung Kim and friends. He had a great day also on the tunas. He said they went 4-7 on yellowfins. They popped a real drag smoker half way thru the fight. They still came back with a great pile of tunas between 50-100lbs.
If your waiting on the fishing to turn on the time has come. The big tuna should stick around until april. The wahoo are here also. We do have boats open for this thursday and friday and the forecast is calling for 1-2 ft seas. Come get your shot at a 200 lb tuna.
